Graduation

Graduation Requirements and Information

All graduate candidates must register to graduate with the Registrar's Office.  Having your capstone committee entered into Graduate Student Tracking by your advisor will activate the "Register for Graduation" link on your CIS page. Deadlines for submission are below.  Applications will not be accepted more than one year in advance and late applications will delay graduation.  Please read the information and instructions both on this page as well as the Registrar's Office, Graduation Division page.

This names of your capstone committee members and the tentative title of your capstone are due via email to the Program Manager by October 15th, the fall before your final spring semester. 2/3 of your committee must be tenured or tenure-track faculty. You can use the OBIA Faculty Lookup tool to determine whether faculty are adjunct, career-line, or tenure-track.

Make sure any "I" or "T" grades have been cleared.  Students with "I" or "T" grades will not be eligible for graduation through the Registrar's Office.

  • Log in to CIS, Student Page, Graduation, Register for Graduation. This link will become active once your Capstone Committee has been entered into Graduate Student Degree Tracking by your advisor.

Students must be registered for at least one credit hour during the semester they plan to graduate.

All graduate students must adhere to the Graduate School's policies and procedures in order to graduate. The University will grant approval for graduation when degree requirements are met and grades submitted.  Diplomas are mailed within 90 days of graduating to the last address University of Utah has for you.  If you would like to verify or change your address please do so in CIS.

Current Deadlines for graduation applications are found on the Registrar's Graduation Division webpage linked above as well as on the Registrar's Graduate Graduation webpage.

If a graduation deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, applications will be accepted without a fee through the next business day.

Failure to submit your application prior to the deadline will delay your graduation.  Please complete your application form carefully.

As part of the degree, students must select a supervisory committee chair to complete a Capstone Project.  The project must be formally approved by the committee chair before the last day of finals of the planned graduation semester in order to graduate. Failure to complete the project will delay graduation, and in accordance with Graduate School Policies, students must maintain continuous enrollment. This means if the project is not complete and approved by the committee chair by the last day of finals, students will need to register for a minimum of three credit hours the following semester in order to complete their project outside the Capstone course.

The University of Utah commencement and convocation ceremonies are held in May for students planning to graduate in summer, fall and spring.  Thus, if a student is within a year of graduation they may walk in the convocation ceremony.

To order graduation regalia, please contact the bookstore in January to find out when they will be processing orders.  Their phone number is 801-581-6325.  Please note, the MPP program is in the College of Social and Behavioral Science.

For more information on Graduation and Commencement Ceremonies visit The University of Utah Commencement Ceremonies web site.

Register with the Career and Professional Development Center.  In registering with the Career and Professional Development Center students will have access to free services such as career counseling, on-campus interviews, job postings, resume referrals, and internship application assistance.
