Graduation Requirements and Information
All graduate candidates must complete an Application for Graduate Degree with the Registrar's Office, Graduation Division. Deadlines for submission are below. Applications will not be accepted more than one year in advance and late applications will delay graduation. Please read the information and instructions both on this page as well as the Registrar's Office, Graduation Division page.
In addition, students must complete a Capstone Approval Form and Program of Study Form. This Capstone Approval Form is due after fall break of their final year and the program of study form is due at the end of their final fall semester. These can either be submitted electronically or in person to the MPP Office.
Make sure any "I" or "T" grades have been cleared. Students with "I" or "T" grades will not be eligible for graduation through the Registrar's Office.
- Log in to CIS, Student Page, Graduation, Register for Graduation. This link will become active once your Capstone Committee has been entered into Graduate Student Degree Tracking by your advisor.
Students must be registered for at least one credit hour during the semester they plan to graduate.
All graduate students must adhere to the Graduate School's policies and procedures in order to graduate. The University will grant approval for graduation when degree requirements are met and grades submitted. Diplomas are mailed within 90 days of graduating to the last address University of Utah has for you. If you would like to verify or change your address please do so in CIS.
Deadlines for graduation applications are:
- Spring Graduation- November 1
- Summer Graduation- April 1
- Fall Graduation- July 1
If a graduation deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, applications will be accepted without a fee through the next business day.
Failure to submit your application prior to the deadline will delay your graduation. Please complete your application form carefully.
Students must complete a Program of Study Form the semester before they graduate. This form indicates the courses, grades, and semester for each class counted towards the degree.
As part of the degree, students must select a supervisory committee chair to complete a Capstone Project. The project must be formally approved by the committee chair before the Graduate School Deadline (of the planned graduation semester) in order to graduate. Failure to complete the project will delay graduation, and in accordance with Graduate School Policies, students must maintain continuous enrollment. This means if the project is not complete and approved by the committee chair students will need to register for a minimum of three credit hours the following semester in order to complete their project outside the Capstone course.
The University of Utah commencement and convocation ceremonies are held in May for students planning to graduate in summer, fall and spring. Thus, if a student is within a year of graduation they may walk in the convocation ceremony.
